Tooth Sensitivity Treatment

That sharp, sudden jolt from a sip of cold water or a spoon of ice cream is one of the most common dental complaints, and also one of the most misunderstood. Most people reach for a desensitizing toothpaste, and for some, that solves it. For others, it does not, because the toothpaste is treating a symptom while the actual cause, a cracked tooth, a receding gum line, decay starting between two teeth, or a leaking old filling, keeps getting worse underneath. At Smile By Alkhaleej Clinics in Bahadurabad, Karachi, tooth sensitivity is never treated as a single generic problem. It is diagnosed first, then matched to the treatment that actually addresses what is causing it. Smile By Alkhaleej Clinics provides implant treatment through its dental team in Karachi, with care available across Bahadurabad. Diagnosing the exact cause of sensitivity is a restorative dentistry skill specifically, it requires understanding tooth structure, enamel wear patterns, and material behaviour at a level that goes beyond recommending a toothpaste brand. Our Bahadurabad clinic, Bahadurabad, are open 10:00 AM–9:00 PM, Monday–Saturday, so a sensitivity assessment never has to wait weeks for an appointment slot.

Why Teeth Become Sensitive: The Mechanism Behind the Pain

Every tooth has an outer layer of hard enamel (or, below the gum line, a layer called cementum) protecting a softer, porous layer underneath called dentine. Dentine is filled with thousands of microscopic tubules that lead directly to the tooth's nerve. As long as enamel or cementum fully covers the dentine, temperature changes and sweet or acidic foods never reach those tubules and the nerve stays unbothered. Sensitivity happens the moment dentine becomes exposed, through worn enamel, a receded gum line, a crack, or a cavity, because now hot, cold, sweet, and acidic stimuli travel straight down those tubules to the nerve, producing that sharp, short-lived pain. This is why treatment has to be cause-specific: desensitizing toothpaste blocks tubules from the outside and helps many mild cases, but if the underlying cause is a growing cavity or a cracked tooth, it only masks the warning signal your tooth was sending.

Is Tooth Sensitivity Treatment Right for You?

If you experience any of the following, sensitivity treatment may be recommended.

01Sharp pain from cold drinks, ice cream, or cold air
02Discomfort when eating sweet or acidic foods
03Sensitivity that started after a recent teeth whitening session
04Pain localised to one specific tooth, especially on biting
05Visible gum recession or a tooth that looks "longer" than before
06Sensitivity that has lasted more than 2 weeks despite using desensitizing toothpaste

The 6 Real Causes of Tooth Sensitivity: And How to Tell Which One You Have

1. Worn Enamel From Aggressive Brushing

Sensitivity localised to a few teeth on the side you brush hardest, often with a visible notch at the gum line.

2. Gum Recession Exposing the Root

Teeth look visibly "longer" than before, sensitivity worse near the gum line specifically.

3. Recent Teeth Whitening

Appears within a day or two of whitening, affects most or all teeth evenly. Usually resolves in 3 to 5 days.

4. A Cavity Reaching the Dentine

Localised to one specific tooth, often worse with sweet foods, sometimes visible discolouration or a small hole.

5. A Cracked Tooth or Failing Filling

Sharp pain specifically on biting or releasing a bite, on one particular tooth.

6. Acid Erosion From Diet or Reflux

Generalised sensitivity across many teeth, sometimes with a smooth, slightly "melted" enamel surface.

Is Your Sensitivity Normal, or a Warning Sign?

Likely Fine to Monitor

  • Mild, brief sensitivity affecting several teeth evenly
  • Started right after a whitening treatment
  • Fades within a few seconds of the stimulus being removed
  • care focused on comfort when biting or chewing

Try a desensitizing toothpaste for 2 weeks. If it improves, continue. If not, book an assessment.

Book an Assessment Soon

  • Sensitivity localised to one specific tooth
  • Pain on biting or releasing a bite, not just temperature
  • Lingers for a minute or more after the stimulus is gone
  • Getting worse over weeks rather than staying the same
  • Visible discolouration, a hole, or a chip on the tooth

These patterns point toward decay, a crack, or nerve involvement, none of which toothpaste can resolve.

The key clinical rule: sensitivity that lingers well after the stimulus is removed, rather than fading within seconds, is the most reliable sign that a nerve issue is developing rather than simple dentine exposure. If your sensitivity has this pattern, do not wait for it to resolve on its own.

Options

Tooth Sensitivity Treatment Options

Compare treatment options to find the best fit for your needs and budget

Professional Fluoride Varnish

Strengthens remaining enamel and helps block exposed dentine tubules, applied in-clinic at a higher concentration than toothpaste.

Duration

5-10 minutes

Lasts

3-6 months, repeatable

Cost

Quoted after examination

Advantages

Same-day, no drilling

Effective for mild generalised sensitivity

Trade-offs

Not a fix for cavities, cracks, or significant recession

Best for

Worn enamel, mild generalised sensitivity, early erosion

Desensitizing Bonding Agent

A thin resin layer painted directly onto exposed dentine, sealing tubules physically at the exact sensitive spot.

Duration

15-20 minutes

Lasts

1-2 years

Cost

Quoted after examination

Advantages

Targets one specific tooth or spot precisely

Same-day treatment

Trade-offs

Localised fix, does not address widespread recession

5-10 years

Cost

Quoted after examination

Covers exposed root surface with grafted tissue, permanently restoring the protective barrier over dentine.

Duration

45-90 minutes

Lasts

Permanent

Cost

Quoted after assessment

Advantages

Permanent fix for significant recession

Improves gum aesthetics too

Trade-offs

More involved procedure with recovery time
